Physical Abuse

There are a broad range of behaviours that come under the heading of physical abuse including:

  • Being attacked, kicked, slapped, bitten, punched, strangled, or other violent acts
  • Being humiliated and degraded by restricted access to toileting and personal hygiene, being forced to sleep on the floor, force fed/starved or denied sleep
  • Endangering health or exacerbating pre-existing conditions by poisoning, by withholding or overdosing of medication.

Consider physical abuse if bruises are apparent; personal hygiene appears poor or has worsened; appointments are regularly missed without explanation and/or the individual is always accompanied.
