Religious and Spiritual Abuse

Religious and Spiritual abuse is experienced where individuals are forced to partake in practices that contradict their spiritual beliefs or prevent them from carrying out religious customs. It is also a factor when religious teachings are used to increase pre-existing coercion and control.

Religious and spiritual abuse may include:

  • Using the spouse's or intimate partner's religious or spiritual beliefs to manipulate them
  • Preventing someone from attending their place of worship
  • Forcing someone to eat foods that are forbidden by their religion
  • Forcing the children to be raised in a faith that the partner has not agreed to.
