The one chance rule

Many people are afraid to raise the issue of domestic abuse for fear of upsetting or offending. Evidence suggests however that those victims who are being subjected to violence want to be asked and that individuals who are not do not mind being asked.

By asking the question even those who don't disclose will then recognise a route for support should they or someone else be in need.

Research suggests that practitioners should be mindful of the "One Chance Rule"– that we may only have one chance to reach out to someone at risk. The manner in which professionals respond is crucial and could save a life.
