Child Sexual Exploitation
Some children and young people may be exposed to Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), which is a form of child abuse. CSE is complex and can manifest itself in different ways. It involves children and young people being manipulated or forced into taking part in a sexual act, either as part of a "inappropriate relationship", "boyfriend and peer exploitation", or "trafficking" in return for attention, gifts, money, drugs or somewhere to stay.
In all cases, those exploiting the child or young person have greater power because of their enhanced age, gender, intellect, physical strength and/or resources. For victims, the pain of their ordeal and fear that they will not be believed means they are often too scared to come forward. This response is frequently relied upon by the perpetrator in order to maintain control.
